Pearl Harbor Lodge Visits Historic Naval Lodge No. 4 in Washington, D.C

During the recent Biennial Session of the Supreme Council, 33°, Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, U.S.A., members of Pearl Harbor Lodge F&AM and its sister lodges from across Hawaii had the unique opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. and visit one of the most historic and storied lodges in the nation — Naval Lodge No. 4.

A Lodge Steeped in History

Naval Lodge No. 4 traces its roots back to 1805, when it was first chartered as Washington Naval Lodge No. 41 by the Grand Lodge of Maryland. Later, when the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia was formed, the lodge became known simply as Naval Lodge No. 4.

With over two centuries of continuous operation, Naval Lodge holds the distinction of being the oldest continually operating Masonic lodge in Washington, D.C. Today, it remains one of the most vibrant and active lodges in the capital, proudly carrying forward its maritime heritage and its strong ties to both the Navy and the wider Masonic community.

A Meeting of Brethren Across Oceans

For the visiting brethren from Hawaii, the experience was both meaningful and inspiring. Pearl Harbor Lodge, itself deeply connected to the U.S. Navy and military tradition, found a special resonance in meeting at Naval Lodge No. 4 — a lodge whose origins and character also reflect a strong naval identity.

The visit provided an opportunity for fellowship, the exchange of ideas, and the strengthening of fraternal bonds that extend far beyond geographical borders. Members of the Hawaii delegation were warmly welcomed, experiencing firsthand the hospitality and brotherly love that unites Masons wherever they travel.

Strengthening Fraternal Ties

Moments like these remind us of the universality of Freemasonry. Whether in Honolulu, Hawaii, or Washington, D.C., the same values of brotherhood, relief, and truth shine through. The connection between Pearl Harbor Lodge and Naval Lodge No. 4 serves as an example of how lodges across the globe can share in each other’s history, traditions, and ongoing work.

As the Hawaii brethren returned home from Washington, they carried with them not only the memory of an extraordinary visit, but also a renewed appreciation for the bonds that unite Masons across jurisdictions. The meeting at Naval Lodge No. 4 will remain a highlight of their travels during the Biennial Session, and a reminder of the timeless brotherhood that transcends oceans.
